Event cancellation announcement:
Dear Freshblooders,
COVID-19 continues to affect our daily lives. It has limited many of our activities, including scientific conferences. Despite all the effort made by us to maintain the dates of the conference, and after much deliberation, sadly, we have to inform you that the FBFW7 should be cancelled.
It is well known that Spain is one of the main hotspots of COVID-19 transmission. National and regional entities have taken a further step to contain the expansion of the virus, and they have restricted in-person conferences and mass events. Therefore, it is not possible to develop the conference as it was originally organized. Moreover, there is a large uncertainty about the availability of international flights in November. Some governments have closed aerial borders with Spain and others have imposed an obligatory quarantine to those persons coming back from Spain. Both reasons contributed to our decision of cancelling the event.
Postponing the event was neither an option considering the large uncertainty for 2021 and the narrow time availability of the team for the near future. We also abandoned the option of going virtual, as we consider that a virtual conference does not meet one of the most important objectives of the FBFW20: to provide a friendly atmosphere to promote networking and exchange knowledge and ideas.
Nevertheless, we would be very happy if someone else took the lead to organise a future conference. We would be glad to help them as much as we can, as well as transfer all the information that can be helpful, such as the list of accepted abstracts and our decisions for the poster sessions, oral presentations and flash talks.
Finally, we also would like to say that we do not regret this attempt. We are proud of sailing this boat until the very end. We are very grateful to all of you, those that submitted an abstract and were willing to participate, those that reviewed abstracts to evaluate them, those that were organising a workshop or a plenary session and those that sponsored the conference and believed in our work. ¡Mil gracias!
All those that registered and paid will receive an email soon with the detailed explanation of how to get the money back.
Thank you so much and see you next time!
Lots of hugs,
The Organizing Team

Breaking news! The time for abstract sumission is over since May 1st, 2020. 81 abstracts are now on the way to the scientific committee for peer reviewing!
Thank you very much to all contributors!
Thank you very much to all contributors!
Here below, you have some information about the abstracts and their authors:
Fresh Blood Meets Anthropocene Challenges
The Fresh Blood for FreshWater is a conference organized by early-career freshwater scientists, representing not just new incomers to the field, but also those who still (or forever) feel themselves ‘fresh blood’. In this regard, the conference aims to provide a friendly atmosphere to present our work and to break boundaries exchanging ideas with other young researchers.
The last 6 editions of the conference were held in Central Europe. Therefore, we would like to bring it to the South in 2020. Specifically, the 7th Fresh Blood for Freshwater Conference (7FBFW) will take place in Bilbao (Spain) from 25th to 28th November 2020, under the topic ‘Fresh blood meets Anthropocene challenges’. See key dates for the registration and submission of abstracts below! |
What is the conference about?
One step beyond ecology
Besides the research areas usual in other editions, this time we go beyond ecology and add a special session on 1) Freshwaters and Society. Other sessions will be about 2) Community Ecology and Biodiversity, 3) Multiple Stressors and Eco-Toxicology, and 4) Biogeochemistry and ecosystem functioning. In any case, studies on macro and microorganisms, and cross-taxon studies, are more than welcome!

Plenary sessions
Cristina Madrid (Institute for Environmental Sciences and Technology), Freshwaters and Society
Maite Arroita (Universidad del País Vasco-Euskal Herriko Unibersitatea), Ecosystem Functioning and Biogeochemistry
WHAT ABOUT HAVING FUN?
Social life, FBFW & BilbaoLife music, pintxos and zuritos. We will enjoy from games and the night life in Bilbao. On Saturday, we will have a field trip to the Artikutza Valley and we will visit the Albaola shipyard.
